How Walking During Pregnancy Prepares You for Birth, A Philly Doula’s Guide

Walking is one of the simplest and most effective ways to stay active during pregnancy. It’s something you can do at your own pace, in your own neighborhood, or on a walking pad and it brings big benefits for both you and your baby!

As a birth doula in Philly, I often encourage my clients to make walking part of their pregnancy routine. You don’t need fancy equipment, and it’s a great way to connect with your body and prepare for labor. Let’s talk about how a little fresh air and movement can go a long way in getting you ready for the big day.

Why Walking is a Pregnancy Powerhouse

  1. Boosts Your Mood. Pregnancy comes with all sorts of emotions, and sometimes, you just need a break. Walking releases endorphins, the “feel-good” hormones, helping reduce stress and anxiety. Walking in one of our beautiful Philly parks or along the Schuylkill River Trail can be a peaceful way to clear your mind and lift your spirits.

  2. Supports a Healthy Pregnancy. Keeping active helps regulate weight gain and lowers the risk of pregnancy complications like gestational diabetes and high blood pressure. Walking is low-impact, gentle on your joints, and can help with circulation and swelling (hello, puffy feet!). Plus, it’s a safe option you can stick with throughout all three trimesters.

  3. Strengthens Your Body for Labor. Walking helps build endurance, which you’ll need for the marathon that is labor. It strengthens your leg muscles, opens your hips, and promotes good posture—all of which help your body get ready for birth. Plus, walking regularly can encourage baby to settle into the right position for delivery, making labor a smoother process.

  4. A Natural Way to Get Things Moving. If you’re nearing your due date and looking for ways to nudge labor along, walking can help! The gentle rocking motion encourages your baby to drop lower into your pelvis, which can lead to dilation and kickstart labor. Many moms in Philly have taken “labor walks” around the neighborhood to give things a little push.

A Philly Doula's Tip, Make It Fun!

You don’t have to make walking feel like a chore. Whether it’s a stroll through the farmer’s market, a walk with a friend, or a quick lap around your block, enjoy it! Listen to your favorite playlist or podcast, take in the sights, and let walking be a time to relax and bond with your baby.
